China Fireworks Factory Innovates with W49 for a Safer, Cleaner Global Market

In the heart of the China Fireworks industry—Liuyang, known as the world’s Fireworks Capital—a major breakthrough is reshaping the future of pyrotechnics. After six years of intensive research, a local R&D team has developed a revolutionary sulfur-free composite reducing agent known as W49. This new material not only eliminates sulfur dioxide emissions but also significantly enhances the safety and stability of fireworks during production and handling.

Traditionally, fireworks and firecrackers require a large amount of sulfur in their manufacturing process. W49 replaces sulfur entirely, achieving zero SO2 emissions while reducing friction and impact sensitivity. Its superior anti-static properties also minimize the risk of accidents caused by static discharge, a hidden hazard in fireworks production.

Liuyang Leads the Green Transformation of China Fireworks

The development of low-smoke, sulfur-free fireworks is seen as a key strategic direction for the sustainable growth of the China Fireworks industry. In recent years, Liuyang has been leveraging its status as an innovation-driven city to push forward breakthroughs in cleaner fireworks technology. Xiao Zhengbo, a member of the Changsha Municipal Standing Committee and Secretary of the Liuyang Municipal Party Committee, has conducted on-site investigations and urged the accelerated adoption of W49. His goal is to cultivate new productive forces that drive high-quality, safe, and eco-friendly growth in the fireworks sector.

What Makes W49 Different?

In field tests, fireworks made with W49 produce the same crisp, satisfying sound as traditional versions—but without the black smoke or pungent smell. Beyond the environmental benefits, its improved anti-static performance is a major advancement in safety. Electrostatic sensitivity tests have shown that W49 dramatically reduces the likelihood of static-triggered accidents during manufacturing, storage, or transport.

To achieve this breakthrough, the research team screened thousands of materials and went through extensive lab trials, pilot production, and repeated optimization. Now, several fireworks factories in Liuyang are already using W49 in trial production. After a 6 to 12-month evaluation period, large-scale adoption is expected.

China Fireworks Industry Embraces High-Tech, Low-Emission Future

The fireworks industry in Liuyang is not only a cultural heritage but also a pillar of economic development. At the 13th Plenary Session of the Municipal Party Committee, the city outlined a roadmap focused on safety, innovation, cultural integration, and standardization. One major goal is to widely adopt sulfur-free and low-smoke technologies like W49. So far, two categories of fireworks raw materials in Liuyang have achieved full elimination of sulfur dioxide emissions, marking a major step forward in environmental responsibility and global leadership in the China Fireworks sector.
